Dating Burnout: How to Get Your Spark Back
You open the app and your stomach drops a little. Another hour of swiping. Another "hey, how's your week?" If you're thinking "I'm so tired of dating," hear this first: you're not broken, and you're not alone. Dating burnout is real, and it happens to the best of us.
The good news? Burnout is not a sign to give up on love. It's a sign to change how you're dating.
What is dating burnout?
Dating burnout, or dating fatigue, is the emotional, mental and even physical tiredness that builds up from dating, especially online. It's that heavy "what's the point?" feeling that makes you dread something that used to feel exciting.
And it's everywhere. In a Forbes Health survey of 1,000 American adults who had used a dating app in the past year, 78% said dating apps left them exhausted at least some of the time. Whatever your age, if you're tired, you're in good company.
The signs you're burned out
- You dread opening the app, but you keep opening it anyway.
- You swipe without really looking at anyone.
- You go into dates already expecting them to fail.
- You've started thinking "all the good ones are taken."
- You feel worse about yourself after a night of swiping than before it.
If you nodded at three or more, it's time for a reset. Not a breakup with love. A reset.
Why dating wears us out
Psychologists Tila Pronk and Jaap Denissen studied what happens when people look at dating profiles one after another. The more profiles people saw, the more likely they were to reject them. They called it a "rejection mind-set."
So if nobody out there seems right for you, endless swiping may be training your brain to say no.
1. Take a real break, on purpose
Hide your profile or delete the apps for a week or two. Tell yourself, "This is a reset, not quitting."
Then refill your own cup. See your friends. Move your body. Sleep. The more you love yourself, the easier it is for someone else to love you. More on that in Love Yourself First. If you'd like real help rebuilding your confidence, that's exactly what UR-Amazing.org self-love and confidence coaching is for.
2. Put a timer on the apps
When you go back, set limits. Dr. Rufus Tony Spann, a sex therapist on the Forbes Health advisory board, recommends no more than 30 minutes at a time on dating apps, with breaks in between. Set a timer, read fewer profiles more carefully, and never swipe in bed.
3. Go where people want what you want
A lot of burnout comes from getting halfway into something only to find out you were never looking for the same thing. Start in a room where people already share what matters to you.
That's why our speed dating nights come in groups: PrimeTime for singles 45 and up, Now or Never for ages 21 to 44, Pride Time for LGBTQ+ singles, and open nights for every single adult 21 and over. Not sure what you want yet? Take the free Dating Skills Test and see where you shine.
4. Stop being pen pals. Meet sooner.
Endless texting is one of the biggest energy drains in dating. The chat fizzles, or the real person never matches the picture in your head.
After a few good days of messages, call. Don't text. A short call tells you more than a week of typing. Then suggest something short: "Want to grab a coffee or take a walk Saturday? Just an hour." Our free events calendar is full of easy, no-cost first dates around Las Vegas. Meet somewhere public and tell a friend where you'll be. Here are more dating safety tips.
5. Change the conversation
If every chat feels like a job interview, change the questions. Instead of "What do you do?" try "How do you spend your days?" or "What's something you're looking forward to right now?" Then ask one follow-up.
Or open with a sincere compliment about something they chose, like their style or their laugh. That's the heart of my compliment method, and it changes the whole mood. Need warm-up material? The free compliments app ComplimentsForChange.com is full of kind words.
6. Give a nice person a second date
When you're burned out, it's easy to write someone off for not giving you instant fireworks. But the Kinsey Institute's 2026 Singles in America study found that 49% of singles have fallen for someone they weren't attracted to at first, and great conversation was the most common reason the attraction grew. If the date was kind, easy and fun, but not magic, give it one more try.
7. Don't let ghosting write your story
Being ghosted hurts, and when it keeps happening, it's easy to decide you're the problem. You're not. When someone disappears, it tells you about their communication skills, not your worth.
And you can be part of the cure. If you're not feeling it, say so kindly instead of vanishing. I teach this as the soft rejection: "I really enjoyed meeting you, but I don't feel a romantic connection. I wish you the best."
8. Meet a whole room at once
Sometimes the best cure for app fatigue is to put the phone down and walk into a room full of real people. At our speed dating nights I host in person, we start with a short lesson, and then you have 12 to 15 short dates in one night with a host on the floor keeping time. No catfish, no ghosting, no endless chat.
A gentle note
Burnout can make us reach for anything that numbs the lonely feelings. Be gentle with yourself. If the tiredness feels heavier than dating, like it's hard to get through the day, please talk to a doctor or counselor. In the US you can call or text 988 any time to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Your 7-day dating reset
- Day 1: Pause. Hide your profiles. "This is a reset, not quitting."
- Day 2: Refill your cup. Do one thing just for you.
- Day 3: Get clear. Write what you want in one sentence, plus three non-negotiables.
- Day 4: Fresh profile. Here's how to write a dating profile.
- Day 5: Pick your places. One app, not five, and one in-person event this month. My 7-step dating plan walks you through it.
- Day 6: Set your limits. Pick your dating time and set that timer.
- Day 7: Come back with intention. Send a few thoughtful messages. That's enough.
Dating should add to your life, not drain it. Let love find you rested and ready.
